Despite their closeness, Debra never figured out that her beloved brother was a prolific killer - but of course, that reveal had to come eventually. In the season 6 finale after Dexter has captured the Doomsday Killer Travis Marshall Colin Hanks and prepares to murder him, Debra walks in at the exact moment Dexter plunges the knife down. While Debra learned the truth about Dexter in the closing moments of season 6, it was season 7 that dealt with the actual fallout of her discovery.
Dexter is initially able to convince his sister he just snapped and Marshall's death was a once-off, but she later learns the full extent of his hobby; or that her own policeman father Harry Morgan knew of Dexter's tendencies and helped shape his "code" by targeting other killers.
Naturally, this caused a great deal of tension and heartache in the final two seasons, which is only amplified when Debra comes to realize she's actually in love with her adopted bro too. After Thomas Matthews promotes her, she gains confidence in herself and relies less on Dexter's abilities and more on her own.
She doesn't realize that Rudy is dating her in order to get close to Dexter, and she falls in love with him. In mid-season, Debra and Lundy develop a romantic relationship.
While living in Dexter's apartment , Debra keeps leaving the place a mess to the point where Dexter says, half-jokingly, "I will not kill my sister. She is more determined than ever to earn a detective shield. However, she is very upset when Frank Lundy leaves Miami due to his work. As Season Three begins, Debra's hair has been cut to shoulder length. She has "sworn off men, liquor, and smokes" and is even more dead set on earning her silver detective shield.
She is working with a new partner, Detective Joey Quinn , who both annoys her and attracts her. She is soon approached by Yuki Amado , an Internal Affairs officer, who tells her that her partner, Quinn, is being investigated as a dirty cop, but Debra refuses to assist Amado. Debra is originally part of the team investigating the murder of Miguel Prado 's brother, Oscar , but because of her lack of tact and people skills, she is removed from the case by the newly-promoted Detective Sergeant Batista.

However, because of her success on the Skinner Case, she is given her detective shield. During a conversation between Debra and Dexter, he mentions that her father had slept with one of his confidential informants. This blindsides Debra as she idolizes Harry.
Driven to learn the identity of the woman, Debra asks Francis for the files on Harry's former C. One of the files is Laura Moser yet unknown to her to be Dexter's biological mother. Meanwhile, her relationship with Anton is on shaky ground, especially when he obtains a gig in the city instead of on a cruise ship.
Anton is happy to spend more time with Debra, but she is conflicted because Frank Lundy has returned to Miami to hunt The Trinity Killer. While working with Lundy on the case, Debra once again becomes involved with him. Soon, both she and Lundy are shot by an unknown assailant at first suspected to be the Vacation Murderers. Lundy dies, but Debra later recovers. While in the hospital, Debra confesses to Anton that she slept with Lundy, and they break up.
The police begin to suspect that The Trinity Killer is the shooter. However, Debra discovers that Trinity could not have been the shooter because her bullet wound is a horizontal line.
This convinces her that the shooter is someone shorter than Trinity, similar to Masuka 's height. During a Thanksgiving dinner, Debra remembers a conversation with Christine Hill. Debra realizes that Christine's knowledge of the shooting was not released outside the police department. This leads her to believe that Christine is the shooter. This is backed up later when it is revealed that she is the daughter of Trinity. When Debra confronts Christine, she confesses to being the shooter, moments before she shoots herself in the head.
She relays this information to Dexter who acts completely shocked, although he already knew this. The story picks up immediately after the close of Season Four. Debra is on the scene shortly, ordering fellow officers to back off her brother as she takes Harrison into her arms and asks Dexter what happened.
Debra is confused at Dexter's response when he says, "It was me. Dexter and Harrison, along with Astor and Cody when they return from Orlando , don't return to the house.
Instead, they stay in Debra's apartment. She is forced to bunk with Astor , while Dexter sleeps on the couch and Cody on the cot.
As Dexter copes with his loss, Debra helps with the care of Harrison. The stress of the cramped living conditions starts to build. Soon, Joey Quinn begins to suspect that Dexter has a possible connection to Rita's murder. Debra takes Dexter to a funeral director , but she ends up being the one who decides on the coffin and flowers, compiles the obituary, and picks up the memorial artwork.
Not wanting Dexter to see the gruesome crime scene again, Debra has Quinn meet her at Rita and Dexter's House to clean up the bloody bathroom.
Quinn at first objects because the the FBI will do it, but she feels it is her duty. After their hard work, the room is left spotless. While washing up, Quinn asks how she's holding up, and Debra breaks down in tears. When Quinn attempts to comfort her, she starts to kiss him, resulting in them having passionate sex. Afterward, Debra sorts through Rita's dresses while Quinn appears pleased by what just happened. On her part, Debra is in extreme denial and blames Quinn for it.
She then takes some of Rita's dresses back to the apartment. When Debra learns from LaGuerta that Dexter skipped out on his FBI interview regarding Rita's death , she becomes infuriated and tries to reach him by phone. When that fails, she rushes to the apartment to find Harrison being fed by "the cat lady" from downstairs. The neighbor explains that Dexter asked her to watch Harrison. Angrily, Debra again tries to call Dexter using some of her famous cuss words , but she still cannot contact him.
Debra, as well as the rest of Homicide, attend the funeral and wait for Dexter, who is still missing. Quinn attempts to run his theory about Dexter by her when Dexter suddenly arrives thus cutting him off and the funeral commences. During this season, Debra tackles a new investigation -- the Santa Muerte Case.
The ensuing awkwardness is only made worse when she is promoted to Lieutenant, thanks in part to Maria LaGuerta 's political machinations. Soon, Quinn and Debra's relationship ends. Debra generally earns the respect of her department but she struggles when Batista and Masuka are not as 'open' to her anymore because of her new job level. The position is also very stressful in itself, and she has doubts whether she can handle the responsibility.
Work and personal troubles begin to weigh down on her, and she is compelled to attend therapy sessions with Dr. Michelle Ross. Later, she has an erotic dream about Dexter which sparks the belief that she in love with him. In a separate case, Thomas Matthews convinces a reluctant Debra to cover up his involvement in the death of a prostitute. However, LaGuerta informs Matthews' superiors about his indiscretion and he is forced into retirement. Last season began with promise — Edward James Olmos!
Elaborate Biblical death scenes! Olmos and Colin Hanks were more campy than creepy, and the gimmick of whether Professor Gellar was alive or dead wore thin.

The episode begins with a clever bit of misdirection as Dexter hauls ass to the Miami airport and a pit stop for gas takes a harrowing turn when his credit cards are denied.
Is he on the lam after Deb tried to turn him in? Is there a manhunt in progress? As it turns out, no and no. This lands him in Dexter's path, which results in one of the series most jaw-dropping moments — the death of Rita Julie Benz.
Dexter's wife Rita sadly meets her end in the finale of Season 4, bled out in the bathtub like many of Arthur's victims. It's even more disturbing to consider that an infant Harrison had a front-row seat for the whole thing. This is further confirmed through a flashback Harrison has during "New Blood," which contains a very surprising cameo.
That cameo is Arthur, once again played by Lithgow, getting out of the tub and telling him, "There, there. Daddy will be home soon. If there's one thing we can count on from "Dexter," it's the series' consistent ability to make you feel something. As mentioned previously, Dexter and Harrison's relationship throughout "New Blood" is fairly strained for very understandable reasons.
With Dexter gone for the majority of his life, it makes accepting him as a father fairly difficult. This is compounded by Kurt Caldwell — who is also a secret serial killer — taking Harrison under his wing. Kurt not only gives Harrison a job but also provides him with a level of understanding and sincerity that he isn't getting from Dexter. In the end, this turns out to be nothing more than Kurt's way to get Harrison alone and attempt to kill him.
But before Kurt can carry out his usual rhythms and finish off Harrison, Dexter arrives to save the day. Dexter — having dispatched Kurt's violent errand boy Elric — arrives in a truck and fends off Kurt to save his son. Afterward, Dexter and Harrison finally embrace in an emotional hug — a legitimately heartwarming if not slightly morbid moment. After an entire season of the duo being mostly emotionally closed off from each other, to see them have a moment of legitimate affection is truly satisfying.
Nothing beats good old-fashioned father-son bonding time, especially when it's done while carrying out a vigilante-style execution. After finally giving Harrison the truth about who he really is, Dexter begins showing his son the tricks of the trade. He elaborates his killing methodology and explains the moral aspect of his "profession" by telling him the story of a predatory birthday clown named Wiggles, who he "took care of. Dexter and Harrison find Kurt's secret murder lair in an underground bunker, where they find all of his victims perfectly preserved like dolls.
Harrison and Dexter quickly come to the same conclusion — Kurt Caldwell has to die by their hands. They quickly put this plan in motion, and Harrison, up close and personal, gets to see his old man at work. It's an epic moment, not just due to seeing Kurt finally get what he deserves but also from seeing Harrison's reaction to Dexter's true self.
Well, it finally happened. After episodes, a disappointing ending, and a revival, Dexter Morgan finally meets his end in the finale of "New Blood. With his cover officially blown and with the sins of his past nipping at his heels, Dexter makes one final run for it. After being thrown in jail by Angela, Dexter tragically kills Officer Logan and drives off in search of Harrison. After finding Harrison, Dexter makes it clear that they need to leave, but upon figuring out his dad killed his coach, Harrison quickly changes his tune.
He calls Dexter out on everything — and we mean everything — yelling at his father to "Open your eyes and look at what you did!
In this moment, Dexter — seeing flashes of those he's wronged, including Debra — finally accepts his long-overdue fate in the "New Blood" ending. Dexter asks Harrison to shoot him, and after turning off the safety per his dad's instructions, he does. In his final moments, Dexter tells Harrison that he "did good," and as Debra's ghost appears to him, the killer finally bleeds out in the snow.
